About this course

MA (Hons) in Portuguese and Scottish Literature, a joint honours degree in English Literature and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Students spend the third year abroad in a Portuguese-speaking country to study or work. The first year covers poetry, drama, prose, linguistics and English language, alongside options in Celtic and Scottish ethnology, business, economics and informatics, politics, social policy, social anthropology and international relations, art and architectural history, history, classics and archaeology, and philosophy, divinity and law. Year 2 features modules such as Cultural Responses to War, Migration, Exile, Diaspora, Crime and Detection in Literature, Gender and Culture, The Coming-of-Age Narrative, Introduction to European Cinema, Dynamics of Language and Power, Languages Beyond University, Catalan or Spanish, and different aspects of linguistics. Year 3 involves studying or working in destinations including Rio de Janeiro in Brazil or Lisbon and Coimbra in Portugal. The final year focuses on presenting and discussing cultural, political and societal topics in Portuguese, as well as advanced comprehension, summary writing, translation and composition.
