About this course

MA (Hons) in Scandinavian Studies (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish), a Scandinavian Studies degree focused on modern Nordic languages and cultural history. The programme requires no prior language knowledge and allows students to specialise in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish while developing an understanding of the other two languages. Students spend the third year abroad studying or working in Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The first year covers introductory options across disciplines such as linguistics and language sciences, philosophy, divinity and law, and history, classics and archaeology. The second year explores literature and cultural themes through options including Cultural Responses to War, Crime and Detection in Literature, and Gender and Culture. The third year involves a period of study or work across one or two destinations. The final year advances linguistic proficiency through modules such as spoken Danish, Norwegian or Swedish and translation from your Scandinavian language into English, alongside specialist options including Old Norse Literature and Society, Viking Studies, and Contemporary Scandinavian Literature: A Transnational Approach.
