About this course

MA (Hons) in Scottish Ethnology, a Scottish Ethnology and Studies degree centred on the study of the culture and traditions of societies. Core topics include Fieldwork. Students work with materials in the School of Scottish Studies Archives and Scottish Studies Library. Year 1 establishes foundational knowledge through Conceptualising Scotland, Creating Scotland, heritage and literature. Year 2 explores culture through Scotland and Orality (Voicing Scotland) and Visualising Scotland alongside song and storytelling. Year 3 advances subject depth through Archives and Interpretation, Ethnological Fieldwork Methods, Traditional Narrative and Traditional Song (Gaelic and Scots options). Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as Traditional Music, Traditional Drama, The Supernatural World and Material Culture in Scotland.
