About this course
BA in Ancient History, a classics degree centred on the historical development, societies and political structures of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Core topics include Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students learn a classical language in the first year with options to continue this study in later years, while final-year specialist subjects are taught in small-group seminars aligned with faculty research interests. Year 1 introduces foundational historical contexts and linguistic skills through compulsory modules such as Greek History: Problems and Sources, Roman History: Problems and Sources, Ancient World: Greek Philosophy, and Classical Language and Texts Greek I (A). Optional modules allow students to explore topics like Ancient World: Racecraft, Roman Death and Commemoration, and Ancient Sources (Written Evidence): Tyranny. Year 2 continues core historical studies with modules including Greek History: Problems and Sources and Roman History: Problems and Sources, alongside optional choices such as Classical Language and Texts: Greek IV, Classical Language and Texts: Latin IV, and Text and Context: Roman Laughter.
