About this course
BA in Modern Languages and Latin, a modern languages and classics degree centred on linguistic acquisition, classical texts, and cultural history within Modern Languages and Classics. Core topics include Research Methods, Historical Research, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Language & Translation, and Global & Comparative Perspective. Students divide their time equally between Latin and a second modern language, choosing from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. The curriculum includes an optional third-year study or work placement abroad in a region relevant to the chosen modern language. The first year establishes fundamental linguistic competence alongside foundational classical studies, featuring compulsory language modules such as French Language, German Language, Italian Language, Classical Language and Texts: Latin III, and Beginners Chinese. Students can also select from optional modules spanning history, culture, and regional studies, including The Making of Modern France, Turning Points in German History 1200 - 2000, and Ancient World: Racecraft. The second year builds directly on these competencies through advanced linguistic practice and further literary analysis, with compulsory modules like French Language, Written and Oral, German Language, Written and Oral, and Classical Language and Texts: Latin IV. Optional choices in the second year allow further specialisation in areas such as European culture, cinema, or political history through modules including Research Skills in Languages and Cultures, Contemporary Latin American Cinema, and Berlin - Culture, History and Politics.
