BSc Environmental Geoscience
About this course
BSc in Environmental Geoscience, an earth and environmental sciences degree centred on the geological, chemical, and physical study of natural planetary processes and contemporary environmental challenges. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Mathematical Modelling, Research Methods, Fieldwork, Environmental Analysis, Engineering Design, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Ethics & Professional Practice. Students undertake over 60 days of fieldwork and benefit from professional accreditation by the Geological Society. The first year covers foundational principles through Earth System Science, Earth and Environmental Chemistry, Field Geology and Geological Maps, and Quantitative Methods for Geoscientists. The second year progresses to spatial data usage and geological mapping techniques via Remote Sensing for Environmental Management, Grand Geoenvironmental Challenges, Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, and Geological Mapping Techniques, alongside optional modules such as Waste and Society, Physical Ocean Processes, and Geotechnics. The final year focuses on advanced investigation and applied management through GIS for Geologists, Contaminated Land Management and Remediation, Climate Change: Past and Future, Hydrogeology, an International Field Class, and a compulsory Dissertation Project. Students may further tailor their final-year studies by selecting from optional modules including Energy Resource Geology, Volcanology, Politics, Mining and Sustainable Development, Surveying and Digital Mapping, Evolution of a Liveable Planet, and Soil Mechanics with Mine Tailings Engineering.
