About this course
Undergraduate MArabic in (Master of Arabic and Islamic studies), an undergraduate degree centred on Hebrew and Jewish Studies. Core topics include Research Methods. The programme includes a compulsory year abroad spent in an Arabic-speaking country for language and cultural immersion. The first year introduces foundational themes through Politics and Economy of the Contemporary Middle East, Introduction to Islam, Elementary Arabic Language I, Elementary Arabic Language II, and Histories of the Middle East, 600-1800 C.E., with optional choices including Introduction to Islamic Archaeology and Elementary Turkish I. The second year consists of a Year Abroad with Work Placement in an Arabic-speaking country to advance language proficiency. The third and final stages build on this with compulsory study in Intermediate Arabic Language and an Independent Research project leading to a dissertation. Optional modules allow students to explore topics such as Nationalisms in the Middle East, The History and Political Development of Iraq, and Armed Islamist Movements: Jihadism and Beyond.
