About this course

MSci in Computer Science, a computer science degree focusing on system design, software development, and theoretical foundations. Core topics include Programming, Computer Architecture, Embedded Systems, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Project Management, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. This four-year programme mirrors the corresponding BSc curriculum for its initial three years while incorporating a research-focused fourth year, and carries professional accreditation from the BCS. The first year establishes fundamental mathematical and technical concepts through compulsory modules such as Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science, and Fundamentals of Machine Learning. The second year expands technical capabilities through collaborative practical work and core studies in Software Development, Database Theory and Design, Network and Computer Security, and Functional Programming, alongside optional choices including Web Development, Artificial Intelligence and Applications, Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing, and The C Family. The third year involves advanced independent project work, a period of studies abroad, and optional topics such as Data Science at Scale, Computer Vision, Social Networks and Text Analysis, Security Assessment and Validation, Probabilistic Machine Learning, Enterprise Computing, Nature-Inspired Computation, Computability and Complexity, Algorithms that Changed the World, High-Performance Computing, and Commercial and Industrial Experience.
