Software Engineering (faster route)
Entry requirements
A level: (Three A-levels at Grades A*AA which include Computing and Mathematics attained in one exam year and at the first attempt.) IB: (38 points with three Higher Level subjects at 6,6,6 including Computing Science and Mathematics.) Scottish Higher: Advanced Highers – AAA including Computing and Mathematics attained in one exam year and at the first attempt. Applicants must also meet the standard offer threshold (see Software Engineering ) with S5 grades to be considered for faster route.
About this course
BSc/MSci in Software Engineering (faster route), a software engineering (faster route) degree focused on the principles and practice of computing systems. Core topics include Programming, Systems Design, Computer Architecture, Data Analysis, Research Methods, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students complete an industry placement option and undertake a substantial individual project during the later stages of the programme. The second year covers foundational computing through modules such as Computing Science 1F - Computing Fundamentals, Introduction to Object Oriented Programming, Algorithmic Foundations 2, and Networks and Operating Systems Essentials 2. The third year advances into core professional topics including Professional Software Development (H), Algorithmics I (H), Systems Programming (H), and a Team Project (H), alongside options like Cyber Security Fundamentals (H) and Database Systems (H). The fourth year introduces advanced specialization topics including Professional Skills and Issues (H), Artificial Intelligence (H), Deep Learning (M), and Distributed and Parallel Technologies (H), alongside an Individual Project (H) (Single). For students progressing to the MSci, the final year culminates in an MSci Individual Project and Project Research Readings In Computing Science (M), supported by advanced options such as Advanced Networked Systems (H) and Algorithmics II (H).
