About this course
BSc in Biological Sciences, a biology degree examining living systems from molecules and cells up to whole organisms and ecosystems. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, and Fieldwork. The course includes a final-year research project and offers specialisation pathways in the second year across areas such as ecology, molecular biology, cell biology and development, microbiology, and immunology. The first year establishes foundational knowledge through compulsory modules including Biological Chemistry and Microbiology, which covers enzyme biochemistry and cellular metabolism, Evolution and Diversity, which explores the tree of life, and Cell Biology and Genetics, focusing on cellular information transfer and genetic systems. Students also take Ecology and Evolution, examining ecosystems and experimental design, and Core Skills for Life Scientists, which introduces mathematical and computational methods. Optional modules in subsequent years allow further specialisation, culminating in independent research.
