About this course

MSci in Chemistry with Molecular Physics, a degree centred on the intersection of physics and chemistry through mathematical and computational approaches. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Research Methods, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students complete a six-month independent research project within an academic research group during the final year. The first year establishes fundamental concepts via modules such as Language of Chemistry, Structure and Bonding: Atomic Structure to Molecular Orbitals, Introduction to Spectroscopy, Reactivity at Carbon Centres, The Reaction Toolkit: Thermodynamics and Kinetics, Chemistry of the Elements: Hydrogen to Uranium, Practical Chemistry 1, and Mathematics and Physics 1. The second year progresses with Electronic States and Bonding, Analysis of Molecules, Materials and Mixtures, Solids, Liquids and Interfaces, Chemistry of Molecular Systems, Macromolecules and Materials, Control and Selectivity in Molecular Synthesis, Practical Chemistry 2, and Mathematics and Physics 2. The third year involves Advanced Chemistry Topics 1 for Molecular Physics, Advanced Chemistry Topics 2 for Molecular Physics, Practical Chemistry 3 for Molecular Physics, and I-Explore. The fourth year features Advanced Interfacial Science and the Research Project alongside optional modules allowing specialisation in subjects such as Advanced Catalysis, Advanced Stereochemistry, Synthesis and Biosynthesis, Molecular Imaging, Sustainable Chemistry, Chemistry of Nanomaterials, Membrane Biophysics, Processable Electronics from Materials Chemistry to Device Applications, Renewable Energy from Solar Cells to Fuel Cells, and Nanomedicine.
