About this course
MSci in Chemistry, a chemistry degree centred on core and applied chemical principles taught to Master's level. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Research Methods, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. This four-year course is professionally accredited and includes a six-month independent research project in the final year where students join an academic research group. The first year covers the foundations through Language of Chemistry, Structure and Bonding: Atomic Structure to Molecular Orbitals, Introduction to Spectroscopy, and Reactivity at Carbon Centres. The second year builds on this with Electronic States and Bonding, Analysis of Molecules, Materials and Mixtures, Solids, Liquids and Interfaces, and Chemistry of Molecular Systems. The third year involves Advanced Chemistry Topics 1, Advanced Chemistry Topics 2, and Practical Chemistry 3 for MSci Chemistry. In the final year, students complete a Research Project and can select from optional modules such as Advanced Catalysis, Advanced Stereochemistry, Synthesis and Biosynthesis, Molecular Imaging, Sustainable Chemistry, Chemistry of Nanomaterials, Membrane Biophysics, Processable Electronics from Materials Chemistry to Device Applications, and Renewable Energy to Fuels and Chemicals.
