About this course

BSc in Physics with Theoretical Physics, a physics degree centred on mathematical and computational approaches to physical theory. Core topics include Programming, Circuit Design, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Laboratory Techniques, and Research Methods. The course includes a final-year independent research project and an optional placement year or specialized module choices in later stages. The first year covers foundational principles through compulsory modules such as Practical Physics: Laboratory, Computing and Problem Solving, Vector Fields, Electricity and Magnetism, Mechanics and Relativity, Oscillations and Waves, and Statistics of Measurement and the Summer Project, alongside optional choices like Advanced Electronics. The second year advances core knowledge through modules including Advanced Practical Physics, Thermal Physics and the Structure of Matter, Differential Equations and Electromagnetism, Quantum Physics, and Mathematical Methods, with optional topics such as Suns, Stars and Planets. The third year involves compulsory study in Nuclear and Particle Physics, Comprehensives, Solid State Physics, Advanced Classical Physics, and a Self-Study Module. Students can further tailor their studies through numerous optional modules spanning subjects such as Lasers, Cosmology, General Relativity, and Computational Physics.
