About this course
MSci Hons in Biochemistry, a biochemistry degree focused on cellular, molecular and chemical interactions within living systems. Core topics include Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, and Statistics. Students undertake independent research projects in both the third and fourth years of study. The first year covers foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as Fundamentals of Chemistry A, Genetics and Biotechnology, Introduction to Biosciences, Microbes, Pathogens and Immunity, and Molecules to Cells, alongside optional modules like Foundations of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Science. Year 2 continues with core studies in Biochemistry of Cellular Metabolism, Life Cycle of Proteins, and Microbiology and Immunology, while offering optional modules including Cell and Developmental Biology, Drug Design and Development, Fundamentals of Neuroscience, Principles of Chemical Structure Determination, Organic Chemistry, Molecular Genetics, and Pharmacology. Year 3 incorporates core modules in Bioinformatics, Biosciences Research Project, and Global Health Challenges, alongside optional modules such as Advanced Drug Design and Development, Advanced Neuroscience - Circuits and Systems, Medicinal and Biological Applications of Organic Chemistry, Strategies in Chemical Synthesis, Biology of Ageing, Cancer Biology and Therapeutics, Cell Signalling in Health and Disease, Ethics in Biomedicine, and Medical Genetics and Clinical Immunology. The final year centres on the Biosciences Integrated Master's Research Project and allows students to choose from optional modules including Brain Disorders, Cancer - Bench to Bedside, Drug Development from Concept to Clinic, Emerging Therapeutics in Immunology, and Neglected Tropical Diseases.
