About this course

BSc Hons in Biology (Study Abroad), a biology degree covering the study of living organisms, ecological systems, and cellular functions. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, Fieldwork, and Environmental Analysis. The programme includes a dedicated year abroad spent studying at an approved international partner university, alongside practical training supported by laboratory facilities and field trips. A substantial independent research project is undertaken in the final year. The first year establishes fundamental scientific knowledge through compulsory modules including Evolutionary Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology, Introduction to Biosciences, and Molecules to Cells, with optional modules available in Biodiversity and Global Change, Ecology Field and Data Skills, Foundations of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Science, and Microbes, Pathogens and Immunity. The second year provides further progression through diverse optional study paths spanning molecular, cellular, and organismal topics, featuring modules such as Biochemistry of Cellular Metabolism, Biological Research Design and Delivery, Cell and Developmental Biology, Drug Design and Development, Ecology and Conservation, Ecology Field Skills, Evolution, Fundamentals of Neuroscience, Life Cycle of Proteins, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Genetics, Pharmacology, Plant Biology, and Vertebrate Biology. The third year is dedicated to the study abroad placement. The final year centres on the Biosciences Research Project alongside advanced optional modules covering topics such as Advanced Drug Design and Development, Advanced Neuroscience - Circuits and Systems, Animal Behaviour, Bioinformatics, Biology of Ageing, Cancer Biology and Therapeutics, Cell Signalling in Health and Disease, Coral Reef Ecology, Ethics in Biomedicine, Global Health Challenges, Interdisciplinary Conservation Science, Marine Ecology Field Course, Medical Genetics and Clinical Immunology, Sustainable Agriculture, and Tropical Ecology and Conservation Field Course.
