About this course
BSc Hons in Chemistry, a chemistry degree exploring the composition, structure and properties of substances. Core topics include Data Analysis, Laboratory Techniques. The three-year course features a major research project in the final year and includes opportunities to transfer to an MChem programme based on academic performance. The first year covers the foundations through Fundamentals of Chemistry A, Fundamentals of Chemistry B, Introduction to Practical Chemistry, and Principles of Physics and Sustainability for Chemistry. The second year progresses to Principles of Chemical Structure Determination, Practical and Skills in Chemistry A, Practical and Skills in Chemistry B, and Inorganic and Materials Chemistry. The final year involves Physical Chemistry of Complex Systems, Advanced Practical Skills in Chemistry, Strategies in Chemical Synthesis, and Chemistry Project and Skills. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as spectroscopy, materials, and organic chemistry through choices like Techniques for Chemical and Electronic Structure Elucidation, Applications of Inorganic and Materials Chemistry, and Medicinal and Biological Applications of Organic Chemistry.
