About this course
MChem Hons in Chemistry (Study Abroad), a chemistry degree centred on core chemical principles and practical laboratory work. Core topics include Data Analysis, Laboratory Techniques, and Research Methods. The course includes a dedicated year spent studying abroad at an approved international partner university during the fourth year. The first year covers atomic foundations, reactivity, and practical techniques through compulsory modules such as Fundamentals of Chemistry A, Fundamentals of Chemistry B, Introduction to Practical Chemistry, and Molecules to Cells. The second year progresses into physical, inorganic, and organic principles with modules like Concepts in Physical Chemistry, Inorganic and Materials Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Principles of Chemical Structure Determination. The third year builds advanced practical and research skills through modules such as Advanced Practical Skills in Chemistry, Chemistry Project and Skills, Physical Chemistry of Complex Systems, and Strategies in Chemical Synthesis, alongside optional modules covering topics like medicinal chemistry and electronic structure elucidation. Following the fourth-year study abroad period, the fifth year incorporates master's-level study and features a substantive independent research project through the MChem Chemistry Research Project and Skills module, alongside optional choices spanning advanced materials, chemical process characterisation, computational chemistry, and organic synthesis.
