About this course
MChem Hons in Chemistry (with Industrial Placement), a chemistry degree centred on core chemical principles, laboratory practice, and an integrated industrial work experience year. Core topics include Data Analysis, Laboratory Techniques, and Research Methods. The course includes a dedicated industrial placement year where students work in a graduate-level role while completing distance-learning Master's-level modules and an industrially focused research project. The first year covers the foundations through Fundamentals of Chemistry A, Fundamentals of Chemistry B, Introduction to Practical Chemistry, and Professional and Research Skills in Chemistry, establishing basic knowledge of atomic structure, reactivity, and practical methods. The second year builds competence with Concepts in Physical Chemistry, Inorganic and Materials Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Principles of Chemical Structure Determination. The third year advances independence through Advanced Practical Skills in Chemistry, Chemistry Project and Skills, Physical Chemistry of Complex Systems, and Strategies in Chemical Synthesis, alongside optional modules such as Applications of Inorganic and Materials Chemistry, Medicinal and Biological Applications of Organic Chemistry, and Techniques for Chemical and Electronic Structure Elucidation. The final year centres on the Placement and the MChem Chemistry Research Project and Skills, supported by optional modules including Frontiers in Biological Applications of Inorganic and Materials Chemistry, Frontiers in Chemical Process Characterisation, Frontiers in Computational Chemistry, and Frontiers in Organic Chemistry.
