About this course
BA Hons in Criminology (Study Abroad), a sociology degree centred on the study of crime, criminal justice systems, and related social behaviours. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, Fieldwork, Policy Analysis, Historical Research, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students spend the third year studying abroad at an international partner university. The first year introduces foundational subjects through compulsory modules such as Explaining Criminology, Exploring the Criminal Justice System, Crime and Popular Culture, A Brief History of Crime and Criminology, and Doing Criminology: How We Know About Crime, alongside a wide variety of optional choices. The second year deepens analytical capabilities through core studies including Criminological Thought, Measuring Crime, and Understanding Criminological Fieldwork, alongside optional modules covering topics such as youth justice, organised crime, cybercrime, policing, and financial crime. The final year focuses on advanced criminological issues through core learning in Prisons, Punishment and Society. Students can also select from optional modules exploring areas like green criminology, drug use, crimes of the powerful, gendered harm, hate crime, sex crimes, and can undertake an independent Criminology Dissertation.
