About this course
BA Hons in English Language and Linguistics, an English Language and Linguistics degree centred on the study of communication, structure, and social variation across different contexts. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students can also apply for paid research internships to work alongside academic staff on active projects. The first year introduces foundational elements through English across Space and Time, English in Use, Foundations of Language, Language in Mind and Society, and Linguistic Inquiry and Applications. The second year examines speech sounds and grammar structures through English Grammar, English Phonetics, Sounds of the World's Languages, and Structures of the World's Languages. The final year focuses on advanced theoretical topics with compulsory modules including Language and Social Identities and Phonetic and Phonological Theory. Optional modules across the course allow students to explore areas such as computational approaches, forensic linguistics, and psycholinguistics, while a final-year dissertation provides the opportunity to complete an independent research project.
