About this course
BA Hons in English Language and Literature (Placement Year), an undergraduate degree in English Language and Linguistics and English Literature covering both linguistic structures and literary works. Core topics include Research Methods and Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students undertake a full-year professional placement in the third year to gain practical workplace experience. The first year covers foundational modules such as Literature in Time, Foundations of Language, English across Space and Time, English in Use, and World Literatures. The second year builds upon this with compulsory studies in English Grammar, Critical Theory, Discourse Studies, and Critical Practice, alongside optional choices including Language and Pedagogic Practice, Professional Communication, Medieval to Early Modern Literature, Literary Adaptation, Postcolonial Literature, English Phonetics, Language and Creativity in Advertising, American Literature, and Victorian Literature. After completing a work-based placement year in the third sector or industry, the final year features core modules in Language and Social Identities and Language Variation and Change in English. Students can further tailor their studies through numerous optional modules covering areas such as contemporary writing, historical periods, and specific linguistic subfields, with the option to complete either an English Literature Dissertation or a Linguistics and English Language Dissertation.
