About this course
BA Hons in English Language and Literature (Study Abroad), an English Language and Linguistics and English Literature degree centred on the study of literary texts and linguistic structures. Core topics include Research Methods and Critical & Analytical Thinking. Students spend the third year studying abroad at an international partner institution before returning for final-year studies. During the first year, students establish core competencies through modules such as Literature in Time, Foundations of Language, English across Space and Time, English in Use, and World Literatures. The second year builds upon these foundations with compulsory study in English Grammar, Critical Theory, Discourse Studies, and Critical Practice, alongside optional modules covering topics such as medieval literature, postcolonial literature, phonetics, and advertising creativity. In the final year, students undertake core modules including Language and Social Identities and Language Variation and Change in English, while choosing from a wide selection of optional modules covering contemporary literature, romanticism, cognitive linguistics, and psycholinguistics. Students may also complete either an English Literature Dissertation or a Linguistics and English Language Dissertation as part of their final-year studies.
