About this course

BA Hons in Film and English Literature, an English Literature and Film Studies degree centred on the critical study of cinematic aesthetics alongside literary texts and creative production. Core topics include Research Methods, Project Management, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Social & Cultural Analysis, Global & Comparative Perspective. The programme incorporates a professional work placement year between the second and final years. The first year covers core foundations through Introduction to Film Studies and Literature in Time, with optional modules available in subjects such as Understanding Media and Culture, The Arts and Identity, British Cinema, and World Literatures. The second year progresses through Global Cinemas, Literary Adaptation, and Critical Practice, alongside optional choices including Classic Hollywood Genres, Screenwriting, Film, Gender, Race and Ideology, Critical Theory, Postcolonial Literature, Film Theory and Aesthetics, Short Film Production, American Literature, and Victorian Literature. The third year consists of a dedicated work-based learning placement. The final year culminates in an independent research project alongside Contemporary Literature, with further optional modules including Global Film Genres, Documentary Production, Romanticism, Film Industries, Practices and Movements, Film Circulation, Exhibition and Audiences, Experimental Film Production, Austen and the Brontës, Gothic and Science Fiction, and Shakespeare.
