About this course

BA Hons in Film, Media and Cultural Studies (Study Abroad), a film studies degree centred on the critical and practical analysis of cinema, media forms, and cultural practices. Core topics include Research Methods, Project Management, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Design & Creative Practice, Social & Cultural Analysis, Global & Comparative Perspective. Students spend the third year studying abroad at an international partner institution. The first year introduces foundational concepts through Introduction to Film Studies, Understanding Media and Culture, and British Cinema, alongside optional choices like Transformations in Digital Media, The Reflective Design Process, and Media, Power and Identity. Year two expands global contexts via Global Cinemas and Key Perspectives in Global Media and Culture, with optional pathways such as Classic Hollywood Genres, Film, Gender, Race and Ideology, Screenwriting, Gender and Sexuality in Popular Culture, Short Film Production, Film Theory and Aesthetics, Visual Cultures, and Digital Cultures. The final year involves an Independent Project and Media Industries as core requirements. Optional modules in the final year allow further study in Documentary Production, Global Film Genres, Audiences, Fans and Participatory Cultures, Film Industries, Practices and Movements, Film Circulation, Exhibition and Audiences, Experimental Film Production, The Making of Media and AI Futures, and Mediating the Body.
