About this course

BSc Hons in Language Sciences (Placement Year), an English Language and Linguistics degree centred on the scientific investigation of human speech, cognitive processes, and computational systems. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The programme incorporates a dedicated professional work placement year spent in a graduate-level role within the industry or sector of choice. The first year covers foundational concepts through English across Space and Time, Foundations of Language, Language in Mind and Society, and Linguistic Inquiry and Applications, alongside optional subjects such as Computing Essentials: Programming. The second year focuses on computational and societal dimensions through Computational Approaches and their Applications for Language, Corpus Linguistics, Language and Society in a Data-Driven World, Language Acquisition, and Sounds of the World's Languages. Year three is dedicated to practical industry experience via the Work Based Learning Year. The final year advances specialist knowledge through core studies in Cognitive Linguistics and Phonetic and Phonological Theory. Students can further tailor their studies through various optional modules spanning Forensic Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Language and Social Identities, with the option to complete an independent Linguistics and English Language Dissertation.
