About this course

BSc Hons in Language Sciences (Study Abroad), an undergraduate degree in English Language and Linguistics focusing on the scientific study of human and machine communication. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The programme includes a compulsory third year spent studying abroad at an international partner university. The first year covers the foundations of language through English across Space and Time, Foundations of Language, Language in Mind and Society, and Linguistic Inquiry and Applications. The second year introduces core technical concepts through Computational Approaches and their Applications for Language, Corpus Linguistics, Language and Society in a Data-Driven World, Language Acquisition, and Sounds and Structures of the World's Languages. The final year involves advanced theoretical study through Cognitive Linguistics and Phonetic and Phonological Theory. Optional modules allow students to explore specialist areas such as Forensic Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Language Variation and Change in English, with the option to complete an independent Linguistics and English Language Dissertation.
