Entry requirements
A level: ABB. This should include grade B in either French, German or Spanish, or GCSE grade 6/B in a foreign language. IB: 32 points overall with 16 points from the best 3 HL subjects. This should include 6 in HL French, German or Spanish or appropriate evidence of language learning ability.
About this course
BA Hons in Languages and Global Cultures, a Scottish Ethnology and Studies and Modern Languages degree centred on multilingual proficiency and intercultural understanding. Core topics include Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Global & Comparative Perspective, Research Methods, and Social & Cultural Analysis. Students spend an academic year abroad during the third year to engage directly with overseas communities. The first year introduces foundational linguistic skills alongside core studies in Languages and Global Cultures Now and Planetary Histories, with compulsory modules such as Beginners Languages (CEFR A1/A2) 1 and Becoming Independent in Languages (CEFR B1/B2) 1. Optional choices in the initial stages cover subjects like Foundations of Language, Global Challenges in World Politics, History of Philosophy: Ideas that Shaped the West, Parties, Populism and Protest, and Understanding Culture. The second year advances linguistic competence through modules including Advancing in Languages (CEFR B2 / HSK 5) - 2 and Becoming Independent in Languages (CEFR B1/B2) 2, complemented by optional studies such as Body, Mind and Society, Film Theory and Aesthetics, Global Superpowers, Politics of the Global South, and Society on Screen: The Language of Film. Following the third-year Global Engagement Year (CEFR B2/C1 or HSK 5/6), the final year consolidates expertise with Becoming Proficient in Languages (CEFR C1/C2 / HSK 6/6) - 3 and the Global Cultures Independent Project. Optional modules available in the final year include Global Film Genres, Literature and Environment, The Politics of Borders and Migration, and Sciences and Cultures Lab.
