About this course
BA Hons in Linguistics, an English Language and Linguistics degree focusing on human language structure, social usage, and technical applications. Core topics include Programming, Statistics, Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students are eligible to apply for paid annual research internships to work alongside academic staff on active department projects. The first year establishes core foundations through modules such as English across Space and Time, Foundations of Language, Language in Mind and Society, and Linguistic Inquiry and Applications. The second year examines data-driven and structural aspects via Corpus Linguistics, Language and Society in a Data-Driven World, Sounds of the World's Languages, and Structures of the World's Languages, while offering optional modules in areas like Computational Approaches and their Applications for Language and English Phonetics. The final year concentrates on advanced concepts through compulsory studies like Cognitive Linguistics and Phonetic and Phonological Theory. Optional modules cover diverse subjects such as Forensic Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Pragmatics, with an opportunity to complete an independent Linguistics and English Language Dissertation.
