About this course
MEng Hons in Mechanical Engineering with Placement Year, a mechanical engineering degree centred on the design and development of products, systems, and machinery. Core topics include Mathematical Modelling, Systems Design, Engineering Design, Control Systems, Research Methods, and Project Management. The course features a shared first year with other engineering disciplines, an integrated year-long industry placement in the fourth year, and a final-year individual project. The first year covers foundational principles through Applied Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Skills, Engineering Systems, Engineering Thermofluids, and Fundamental Engineering Mathematics. The second year introduces mechanical specialisations with modules such as Control and Robotics, Engineering Materials, Engineering Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Mass Transfer, Machine Design, and Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer. The third year involves collaborative work through Computer Aided Engineering, Dynamic Systems, Engineering Management and Entrepreneurship, Engineering Project, and Product Design. The fourth year consists of a professional placement in industry. The final year includes core study in Advanced Materials in Design, Individual Project, and Industrial Consultancy, alongside optional modules in areas such as Control and Machine Learning, Hydrogen Technologies and Fuel Cells, Mechatronics and Control Engineering, Nuclear Fuels Engineering, Nuclear Fusion, and Renewable Energy Systems.
