About this course

BA Hons in Media and Cultural Studies, a Scottish Ethnology and Studies and Film Studies degree centred on the analysis of contemporary media forms, cultural practices, and societal structures. Core topics include Research Methods, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and Global & Comparative Perspective. Students gain access to a digital media studio and specialist equipment while examining how digital technologies transform traditional media landscapes. The first year introduces the foundations through compulsory modules such as Understanding Media and Culture, Transformations in Digital Media, Media, Power and Identity, and Screens and Selves. Second-year students progress by taking Key Perspectives in Global Media and Culture, Media in Question, and Designing Media Research, alongside options covering visual cultures, digital cultures, and short film production. The final year centres on the Media Independent Project, where students undertake an in-depth study on a self-chosen topic, supported by optional modules examining media industries, documentary production, and AI futures.
