About this course

MBChB in Medicine and Surgery with a Gateway Year, a medicine degree centred on clinical practice and medical sciences. The programme is specifically designed for talented UK students from backgrounds under-represented in medicine, providing a foundational grounding before progression into the main MBChB curriculum. Students begin with a dedicated Gateway Year that builds core academic skills, medical knowledge and confidence. Following successful completion of this initial year, learners progress into the five-year MBChB programme, which integrates clinical and community placements across diverse regional healthcare settings ranging from rural general practices to urban hospitals. The curriculum uses small-group teaching, case-based learning and simulated patient interactions to develop clinical reasoning and communication abilities. Learners examine multimorbidity and bodily systems while engaging with professional development portfolios and clinical examinations. The final stage prepares trainees for Foundation training and includes preparation for the Medical Licensing Assessment.
