About this course
MEng Hons in Nuclear Engineering with Placement Year, a chemical engineering degree centred on the design, application and maintenance of systems and processes in the nuclear industry. Core topics include Programming, Systems Design, Circuit Design, Embedded Systems, Control Systems, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Research Methods, Project Management, Engineering Design, Entrepreneurship, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The five-year degree incorporates a full-year industry placement and features close connections to local nuclear energy sites, offering site visits, project work, and guest lectures. Following a shared first year covering core foundations through modules such as Applied Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Science, Engineering Skills, Engineering Systems, Engineering Thermofluids, and Fundamental Engineering Mathematics, the second year introduces specialised study with modules including Engineering Materials, Fluid Mechanics and Mass Transfer, Nuclear Decommissioning and Disposal, Nuclear Engineering, Power Engineering, and Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer. The third year builds advanced knowledge through Engineering Management and Entrepreneurship, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Monitoring and Protection, and Power Electronics and Applications. The fourth year consists of a graduate-level industry placement. The final fifth year comprises core study in Advanced Nuclear Engineering, Engineering Project, Individual Project, Industrial Consultancy, and Nuclear Fusion, alongside optional choices from Control and Machine Learning and Renewable Energy Systems.
