About this course

MPhys Hons in Physics, a physics degree centred on mathematical and computational approaches to physical theory. Core topics include Programming, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Laboratory Techniques, and Critical & Analytical Thinking. The four-year degree begins with a shared first year common across all single-honours physics routes, and culminates in a major individual research project during the final year alongside Master's-level study. The first year covers foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as The Physical Universe, Fields, Matter and Quantum Physics, Physics Skills, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Skills 1, and Mathematical Skills 2. Year 2 builds on this with Electromagnetism, Waves and Optics, Experimental Labs, Mathematical Techniques in Physics, Physics Modelling Project, Properties of Matter, and Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics. Year 3 introduces collaborative work through modules such as Industrial Group Project, Physics Group Project, Problem Solving and Sustainability, and Relativity, Nuclear and Particle Physics, alongside optional choices that span Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology, Foundations of Quantum Technology, Further Particle Physics, Low Temperature & Semiconductor Laboratory, Space Physics, and Teaching, Outreach and Public Engagement. In Year 4, students complete the Year 4 Physics Project and Numerical Methods and Data Analysis, while tailoring their studies through optional modules including Advanced Condensed Matter Physics, Advanced Quantum Technology, General Relativity, and Groups, Symmetries and Gauge Theories.
