About this course
MPhys Hons in Physics (Study Abroad), a physics degree centred on fundamental physical principles and advanced theory. Core topics include Programming, Microelectronics, Data Analysis, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Laboratory Techniques, Project Management, Communication & Writing, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The programme includes a dedicated year spent studying abroad at an approved international partner university, as well as an individually supervised final-year research project. The first year covers core foundations through The Physical Universe, Fields, Matter and Quantum Physics, Physics Skills, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Skills 1, and Mathematical Skills 2. Year 2 advances into Electromagnetism, Waves and Optics, Experimental Labs, Mathematical Techniques in Physics, Physics Modelling Project, Properties of Matter, and Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics. Year 3 consists of Study Abroad, taking students to an international partner institution. Year 4 features core modules such as Industrial Group Project, Physics Group Project, Problem Solving and Sustainability, Relativity, Nuclear and Particle Physics, alongside optional choices including Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology, Foundations of Quantum Technology, Further Particle Physics, Low Temperature & Semiconductor Laboratory, Space Physics, and Teaching, Outreach and Public Engagement. Year 5 combines the core modules Year 4 Physics Project and Numerical Methods and Data Analysis with advanced optional modules such as Advanced Condensed Matter Physics, Advanced Quantum Technology, General Relativity, and Groups, Symmetries and Gauge Theories.
