About this course
BA Hons in Sociology and Criminology (Study Abroad), a sociology degree examining the interplay between societal structures and criminal behaviour. Core topics include Statistics, Research Methods, Fieldwork, Project Management, Communication & Writing, Critical & Analytical Thinking, Social & Cultural Analysis, and Global & Comparative Perspective. The programme features a third year spent studying abroad at an international partner institution. In the final year, students complete either a Sociology Independent Project or a Criminology Dissertation. The first year covers core subjects through Thinking Sociologically, Explaining Criminology, Researching Society: Principles and Practices, Doing Criminology: How We Know About Crime, and Exploring the Criminal Justice System, alongside optional modules such as Framing Social Issues and Crime and Popular Culture. Year two advances these themes with core studies in Global Social Theory: Connecting Sociologies, Criminological Thought, Research in Action: Methods for Investigating the Social World, Understanding Criminological Fieldwork, Designing Sociological Research, and Measuring Crime, while offering optional subjects like Youth Justice and Cybercrime and Cybercriminality. Following the international study year abroad, the final year enables independent research through the Sociology Independent Project and Criminology Dissertation. Students can also select from various optional modules in their final year, including Green Criminology, Drugs, Crime and Society, Crimes and Harms of the Powerful, and Hate Crime.
