About this course
BSc Hons in Theoretical Physics with Mathematics, a degree in Physics and Mathematics spanning both mathematical foundations and theoretical physics. Core topics include Signal Processing, Microelectronics, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, Laboratory Techniques, Critical & Analytical Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Teaching is shared across two departments, with mathematical foundations established early before shifting towards theoretical physics applications, and culminating in a collaborative Theoretical Physics Group Project. During the first year, studies establish foundations through core modules such as Fields, Matter and Quantum Physics, Logic and Discrete Mathematics, Matrices and Calculus, Multivariate Calculus, Symmetry and Sequences, and The Physical Universe. The second year progresses with modules including Electromagnetism, Waves and Optics, Experimental Physics, Mechanics and Symmetry, Linear Algebra, Properties of Matter, Quantum Mechanics and Atomic Physics, and Real Analysis. The final year involves advanced core study through Field Theory in Quantum Mechanics and Relativity, Nuclear and Particle Physics, alongside the Theoretical Physics Group Project. Optional modules allow students to explore specialised areas such as Commutative Algebra, Condensed Matter Physics, Cosmology, Further Particle Physics, Graph Theory and Algorithms, Hilbert Spaces, Knots and Geometry, Mathematical Cryptography, and Metric Spaces and Topology.
