About this course
BEng in Architectural Engineering, a civil engineering degree focused on the design and construction of sustainable, energy-efficient building structures and systems. Core topics include Research Methods and Engineering Design. All degree courses within the School of Civil Engineering share a common first year, allowing students to switch between courses at the end of the year, and the programme is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators and the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers. The first year establishes fundamental knowledge through compulsory modules such as Architecture and Sustainability, Surveying, Construction Technology and Management, Structural Analysis and Design, Materials, Water and Soils, Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 1, and Integrated Design Project 1 (including Design Studio 1). The second year advances core concepts via Water Engineering and Geotechnics, Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 2, Design Studio 2, Structural Design and Materials 1, Architectural History and Theory 2, and Building Physics 1: Fundamental Principles. The final year involves advanced compulsory study through Water Engineering and Geotechnics 2, Structural Design and Materials 2, Design Studio 3.2, Individual Research Project 1, Architectural History and Theory 3, and Building Physics 2: Services Design. Optional modules in the final year include Environmental Health Engineering in Developing Countries and Computational Methods for Civil Engineering.
