About this course
BSc in Biochemistry, a biochemistry degree exploring the molecular foundation of life and biological processes. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods. Students can apply for an additional year in industry to graduate with an accredited industrial variant supported by The Royal Society of Biology. The first year establishes core concepts through compulsory modules such as Chemistry for Biochemists, The Basis of Life, Genes to Proteins, Introduction to Genetics, and Introductory Skills in the Molecular Biosciences, with options in organic chemistry, mathematics, and microbiology. The second year progresses to Enzymes, Metabolism, Health and Disease, The Molecular Cell and Therapeutic Development, Omics and Big Data Biology, Intermediate Skills in the Molecular Biosciences, and Intermediate Skills in Biochemistry, alongside choices in cell biology and medical topics. The final year covers Advanced Topics in Biochemistry and Structural Biology, DNA damage, Enzymes for biofuels, Protein dynamics, Natural product biosynthesis, Protein folding and disease, Advanced Topics in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Membranes, How to build an organelle, Disease Models, Signal Transduction in Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease, Stem Cells, and Advanced Skills in Biochemistry. Optional choices in the final year include a Molecular and Cellular Biology Research Project, a Biotechnology Research Project, and a COVID-19 LAMP Testing Placement.
