About this course
MBiol, BSc in Biochemistry, a biochemistry degree focused on molecular and cellular processes within living systems. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods. The integrated Masters structure provides an additional year of specialist training incorporating an extended research project, and students can optionally apply for an industrial placement year leading to an accredited variant. The first year establishes fundamental scientific principles through compulsory modules such as The Basis of Life, Genes to Proteins, Chemistry for Biochemists, and Introductory Skills in the Molecular Biosciences, alongside various optional subjects. The second year progresses to examine cellular mechanisms and metabolic processes via compulsory study in Enzymes, Metabolism, Health and Disease, The Molecular Cell and Therapeutic Development, Omics and Big Data Biology, and laboratory skills modules. The third year delivers advanced study through modules including Advanced Topics in Biochemistry and Structural Biology, DNA damage, Protein dynamics, and Research Tools and Applications, supported by optional choices in advanced cancer biology. The fourth and final year centres on an Extended Research Project alongside a selection of advanced optional modules such as Advanced Biomolecular Technologies, High-Throughput Technologies, and Medical Diagnostics.
