BSc Biology
Entry requirements
A level: AAB (specific subject requirements) BTEC: BTEC Extended Diploma entry requirements: DDM plus A/B in A-level Biology. If the BTEC subject is Applied Science, applicants can have A-level Mathematics, Chemistry or Physics instead. (Other BTEC subjects may be considered alongside a science A-level). IB: 31 overall with 6,6,5 at Higher Level, including Biology and preferably another science or science-related subject. If Biology is the only science at Higher Level, a 6 will be required.
About this course
BSc in Biology, a biology degree spanning life on Earth from genes to ecosystems. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods, and Fieldwork. Students can complete a final-year research project and choose an optional year in industry, leading to a degree variant accredited by The Royal Society of Biology. The first year introduces foundational concepts through compulsory modules such as Living Planet, The Basis of Life, Laboratory and Experimental Skills, and Introduction to Genetics, alongside optional choices like Field Course: investigating UK habitats. The second year builds competence with core studies in How Plants Live, Developing Scientific Excellence, and Evolution, Adaptation and Behaviour, with further options including Animal Physiology and Mediterranean Ecology Field Course. The final year centres on compulsory independent study through Biology Research Projects and Advanced Topics in Plant Science & Food Security, supplemented by specialised optional modules such as Level 3 Field Course (South Africa) and Advanced Topics in Ecology.
