About this course

MChem, BSc in Chemistry with a Year in Industry, a chemistry degree centred on fundamental concepts and practical laboratory applications. Core topics include Microelectronics and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. The curriculum includes a dedicated third-year paid industrial placement within a chemistry-based setting, along with a substantial final-year integrated masters project. The first year covers core theory and introductory practical training through modules such as Introduction to Modern Chemistry, Chemistry and Chemists for a Sustainable Future, and Introduction to Practical Chemistry and Research Skills, with an optional module in Maths for Scientists. The second year advances core knowledge with modules including Organic Chemistry: Structure, Reactions and the Science of Life, Molecules, Energy, Quanta and Change, and Practical, Professional and Research Skills for Chemists. The third year consists of distance learning and industrial placement modules. The fourth year focuses on advanced specialized study and independent research through compulsory modules such as Applications of New Machine Learning Algorithms for Synthetic chemistry, Green Peptide Synthesis for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, and Integrated Masters Project.
