About this course
BA in Child and Family Studies, an early childhood studies degree centred on professional practice and academic study for practitioners working with young people and families. Core topics include Research Methods, Policy Analysis. This four-year part-time course integrates students' ongoing paid or voluntary work experience with theoretical learning, featuring small group teaching and specialized support for adult learners. The first year covers the foundations through Applied Skills in Supporting Children & Families, Theoretical Perspectives on Children and Families and An Introduction to Childhood and Child Development. The second year builds on this with Safeguarding Children - Family Support and Child Abuse, Working With Others in Children's Services and Child Welfare - Research, Policy and Practice. The third year continues with Changing Children's Life Chances credits, Research Methods in Context and Your Development: Advanced. Optional modules across intermediate and advanced years allow students to explore areas such as Working with Change, Conflict and Crisis with Children and Families, Violent and Sexually Offending Young People and Application of Counselling Skills. The final year focuses on Advanced Work-Based Learning, Leadership and Management in Work with Children and Families, and concludes with a dissertation.
