About this course
The BEng in Civil and Structural Engineering is a civil engineering degree focused on the analysis and design of physical infrastructure and the built environment. Core topics include Research Methods and Engineering Design. Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, the curriculum features a common first year shared across all civil engineering programmes that allows for internal transfers. The first year covers core subjects through modules such as Architecture and Sustainability, Surveying, Construction Technology and Management, Structural Analysis and Design, Materials, Water and Soils, Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 1, and Integrated Design Project 1 (including Design Studio 1). The second year advances core knowledge with Water Engineering and Geotechnics, Engineering Mathematics and Modelling 2, Integrated Design Project 2, and Structural Design and Materials 1, alongside optional modules covering topics such as Transport Planning and Modelling 1, Sustainable Engineering Solutions, Highway Engineering, Building Physics 1: Fundamental Principles, Data and Research Methods for Engineers, and Architectural History and Theory 2. The final year consolidates learning through compulsory modules including Water Engineering and Geotechnics 2, Structural Design and Materials 2, Integrated Design Project 3, and Individual Research Project 1. Optional choices in later stages include Transport Planning and Modelling 2, Architectural History and Theory 3, Wastewater Engineering, Environmental Health Engineering in Developing Countries, Highway Engineering 2, Computational Methods for Civil Engineering, Building Physics 2: Services Design, and Engineering Geology.
