A level: AAB (specific subject requirements) BTEC: We will consider the level 3 QCF BTEC at Subsidiary Diploma level and above in combination with other qualifications. Please contact the Admissions Office for more information. IB: 35 points overall with 16 at Higher Level including 5 in English at Higher Level.
About this course
BA in English Language and Linguistics, an English and English Language and Linguistics degree focused on the scientific analysis of human communication and textual structures. Core topics include Data Analysis, Research Methods. The course includes a compulsory work placement year and offers independent study through a dissertation option. The first year covers core foundations through English Structure, Style, Genre, English Variation, Creativity and Use, Language: Meaning and Use, Key Skills in Linguistics, and Language: Structure and Sound. The second year progresses to advanced study with modules including Power of Language, Language in Society, Phonetics, and Syntax. Optional choices across the course span subjects such as Crime Fiction Stylistics: Crossing Languages, Culture, Media, Forensic Approaches to Language, and Psycholinguistics. The final year incorporates a work placement year alongside specialised options like Linguistic Technologies and Sociophonetics, with the possibility of completing an English Language Dissertation or Linguistics Dissertation.
