About this course

MBiol, BSc in Genetics is a genetics degree centred on the study of heredity, molecular biology, and biological science. Core topics include Data Analysis, Statistics, and Research Methods. This four-year integrated Masters programme includes a final-year Extended Research Project and offers students the flexibility to transfer between the BSc and MBiol pathways. The first year covers core foundations through compulsory modules such as The Microbial World, Living Planet, The Basis of Life, and Introduction to Genetics, alongside optional choices. The second year focuses on molecular biosciences with compulsory study in Omics and Big Data Biology, Intermediate Skills in the Molecular Biosciences, Human Populations and Disease, and Medical Immunology. The third year advances into complex subjects via compulsory modules like Advanced Topics in Human Genetics and Epigenetics, Biology Integrated Research Projects, Advanced Genetic Techniques and Applications, and Advanced Cancer Biology. The fourth year delivers specialist training through modules such as generation and analysis of genetically engineered plants, genome engineering using CRISPR/Cas genome editing, and an Extended Research Project. Optional modules in the final year allow further study in areas such as Global Challenges in Food Security, Advanced Biomolecular Techniques, and Advanced Statistics.
