BEng Materials Science and Engineering (Industrial)
Entry requirements
A level: AAB BTEC: DDD (RQF) with Distinctions in relevant Mathematics and Chemistry or Physics units. Some Mathematics and Chemistry or Physics units may be optional on your BTEC but are required by the Faculty. We can only consider the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science if the applicant is also studying A-level Mathematics. Please contact us for further information. IB: 15 points at higher level to include 6 points in Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation or 5 points in Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and either Physics or Chemistry.
About this course
BEng in Materials Science and Engineering (Industrial), an undergraduate materials science and engineering degree focused on the creation and application of engineering materials. Core topics include Statistics. The four-year programme includes an industrial placement year, giving students the chance to undertake a paid work placement with organisations such as BAE Systems, Unilever and Mercedes F1 Team. The first year establishes fundamental mathematical, chemical and physical principles through modules such as Engineering Mathematics, Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Laboratory and Practical Skills, and Introduction to Chemistry for Materials Science. The second year advances quantitative and analytical capabilities with modules including Advanced Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Methods, Process Safety and Environmental Engineering, Fundamental Chemistry for Materials Science, and Statistical Mechanics and Condensed Matter. The final year covers advanced applications and design via modules such as Materials Selection and Design Project, Materials for the Built Society, Materials for the Energy Transition, and Chemistry and Application of Materials.
