About this course

The BSc in Mathematics and Music is an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Music. Core topics include Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, and Research Methods. Students undertake independent project work through a Mathematics Project and an Independent Research Project in the final year. The first year covers introductory foundations through modules such as Core Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Music Analysis, and Performance. The second year introduces distinct study routes through a Pure Mathematics Pathway and an Applied Mathematics Pathway, alongside compulsory modules like Researching Music and Aesthetics. The final year allows students to tailor their studies through numerous optional modules spanning subjects such as Acoustics, Groups and Symmetry, Digital Marketing, and Contemporary Composition.

  • Independent Research Project - This module gives you the chance to explore an area of music of your own choosing. You’ll identify and apply appropriate research methods to contextualise and answer your research questions through either a portfolio of practice (eg a performance, compositions or orchestrations, something in the area of music technology, musicology, a recording project, etc.) with contextual materials, or an extended dissertation. Whichever approach you choose, you’ll work with a supervisor who will offer you guidance as you devise, manage and produce your independent project.
