About this course
BSc in Mathematics and Philosophy, a mathematics and philosophy degree centred on formal reasoning, analytical thinking, and abstract structures. Core topics include Statistics, Mathematical Modelling, and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. Students complete a final-year project in either mathematics or philosophy. The first year covers foundational concepts through Core Mathematics, How to do Philosophy, Real Analysis, and Probability & Statistics. The second year progresses through modules such as Philosophical Method (for Joint Honours), Universal Science: Topics in Formal Logic, Pure Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics. The final year involves advanced study across philosophy and mathematics, featuring modules such as Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics, Truth, and History and Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. Students conclude their studies with a Final Year Project in either Mathematics or Philosophy.
Modules
- Core Mathematics
- How to do Philosophy
- This introductory module offers you a foundation in some of the formal and informal reasoning skills used in philosophy. One of either: Probability & Statistics
- Understanding data and statistics is a critical skill for the modern graduate. This module will introduce you to the theory of probability, which forms the foundation for statistics, as well as developing some key statistical concepts and techniques, equipping you to navigate better the numbers that describe our lives. This module prepares students to pursue either pure maths with statistics or applied maths with statistics in years 2 and 3. Real Analysis
- Real analysis is concerned with the rigorous study of real numbers and real-valued functions, providing a precise framework for understanding and proving mathematical statements about these objects. This module will therefore lay the foundations of differential calculus, developing your problem-solving skills and ability to read and write mathematical proofs. This module prepares students to pursue either pure or applied maths in years 2 and 3. One of either: Knowledge, Self and Reality
- This module introduces you to central issues in philosophy of mind, epistemology, and metaphysics which concern the self and its relationship to the rest of the world. The Good, the Bad, the Right, the Wrong
- Philosophy Meets the World
