About this course
MChem, BSc in Medicinal Chemistry with a Year in Industry, a chemistry degree focused on the design and discovery of pharmaceutical agents. The course includes a paid industrial placement year in the third year working within a chemistry-based setting. This accredited programme is academically linked to the Royal Society of Chemistry. The first year covers core subjects through Introduction to Modern Chemistry, Chemistry and Chemists for a Sustainable Future, Introduction to Practical Chemistry and Research Skills, and Chemistry in Action: Atoms, Molecules, Matter. The second year builds competence via Organometallics: from Bonding to Catalysis, Organic Chemistry: Structure, Reactions and the Science of Life, Chemical Pharmacology and Drug Design, and Chemical Kinetics and Thermodynamics. The third year consists of the Distance Learning for Year in Industry and the Industrial Placement for Integrated Masters Students. The final year involves advanced study and research, featuring modules such as Developing novel inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 main protease, The design and optimisation of novel inhibitors of amylin, Third generation drug discovery: human-on-a-chip, and the Integrated Masters Project.
