About this course

MChem (Hons) in Chemistry, a chemistry degree centred on core chemical principles and experimental practice. Core topics include Programming, Laboratory Techniques, Research Methods, Communication & Writing. The course includes a substantial final-year research project and offers an optional placement year. The first year covers the foundations through Laboratory and Computer Skills 1, Fundamentals of Physical Chemistry, Fundamental Synthetic Chemistry, and Spectroscopy and Analysis 1. The second year builds competence with Laboratory and Skills 2 (Chemistry), Structural Characterisation, Spectroscopy and Analysis, Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Quanta, and Structure and Reactivity 2. The third year shifts towards specialised study and investigative work through Investigative Projects, Modern Aspects of Organic Chemistry, Science Communication, and Current Trends in Inorganic Chemistry, alongside optional modules such as Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis. The final year involves advanced study centered on a Research Project and a selection of optional modules covering Digital and Sustainable Chemistry, Contemporary Organic Synthesis, and Molecular Simulation and Bioinformatics.
